Respiratory Question #38
Isoniazid is prescribed to a client with tuberculosis. How will the nurse instruct the client to take the medication?
- Take the medication with the evening meal for best absorption.
- Take the medication with antacids to relieve GI upset.
- Take the medication 30 minutes following the first meal of the day.
- Take the medication on an empty stomach.
Isoniazid should be taken on an empty stomach. Food would interfere with absorption and antacids affect the medication (by decreasing its effectiveness) and the medication should be taken 1 hour prior to food or 2 hours following food intake.
