Neurological Question #40
The nurse is communicating with a client with multiple sclerosis, which has affected the speech. Which communication actions are necessary for the nurse/client relationship?
- Asking the client to speak up and loudly, especially when tired.
- Encourage the client to speak slowly and not rush sentences.
- Encourage the client to speak distinctly.
- Encourage the client to repeat words that are indistinguishable.
Encouraging the client with MS to speak slowly, distinctly, that it is ok to repeat words that are indistinguishable, and encourage communication are all important with communication. Asking the client to speak loud does not offer dignity and it may exacerbate weakness to muscles.
